Maine's same-sex marriage law took effect on Saturday and, in Portland, marriages licenses began being issued right after midnight.

“We’re paving the way for people to go after us. I think it’s just amazing. It’s freeing. It’s what’s right,” Lisa Gorney told the Associated Press after marrying Donna Galluzzo in front of City Hall early Saturday morning.
