Doug Hampton, a former aide to Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), has been sentenced to one year of probation for violating lobbying restrictions. Hampton, who was originally charged with seven felonies, said he was "very relieved" about his sentence. He reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors in the spring.
Hampton's wife had an affair with Ensign, who was never charged by the Justice Department. The Senate Ethics Committee found that Ensign, who is currently working as a veterinarian, had conspired with Hampton to violate the post-employment lobbying restriction.
