Multiple earthquakes killed at least 50 people and damaged at least 20,000 homes in China, reports the New York Times:
The tremors hit Yunnan and adjoining Guizhou provinces, both agricultural areas populated by some of China’s poorest people. The strongest quake had a magnitude of 5.7, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The Web site of the provincial Yunnan government said more than 100,000 people had been evacuated from their homes in Yunnan, a province known for its scenic beauty and ethnic diversity.
