Federal authorities announced Tuesday they had reached an agreement with East Haven, Conn. to settle claims that the town's police officers had discriminated against Latinos.
The New Haven Register reported Mayor Joseph Maturo joked about the agreement as he signed it last week. “As I’m signing this, should you put a whip behind me?” he reportedly said. Maturo came under fire earlier this year for joking that he “might have tacos" when asked how would help the Latino community amid the discrimination allegations.
Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez, who heads DOJ's Civil Rights Division, said in a news release the agreement "reflects a strong commitment to effective and constitutional law enforcement in East Haven for all who live, work and visit the town.”
