Three Catholic bishops in Colorado have said they will review a wrongful death lawsuit defense in which a Catholic hospital group argued human fetuses aren't people, the Denver Post reported Thursday. Jeremy Stodghill in 2006 filed a wrongful death and malpractice suit against Catholic Health Initiatives after his pregnant wife and her two unborn fetuses died at St. Thomas More Hospital, one of the group's hospitals, in Cañon City, Colo.
From the report:
The Catholic Church has fought for decades to change federal and state laws to protect fetuses as persons. Yet, according to court documents, Catholic Health Initiatives argued in this case that the Colorado Wrongful Death Act requires the death of a person and the statute doesn't include the death of a fetus that wasn't born or delivered.
