A group of civil rights organizations filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday challenging Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's policy of denying driver's licenses to young illegal immigrants who have been given a legal reprieve by the federal government.
The lawsuit, spearheaded by the ACLU and filed on behalf of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, will seek to block an order issued by Brewer in August that denied driver's licenses for illegal immigrants who have been authorized to live and work temporarily in the U.S. under President Obama's deferred-action program. According to the Arizona Republic, approximately 80,000 undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US before the age of 16 are eligible for the deferred-action program.
