BlackBerry 10 Will Launch Jan. 30, 2013

Research-in-Motion's last, best hope for forestalling the decline of its once dominant BlackBerry smartphone line -- the new BlackBerry 10 operating system -- will be launched on January 30, 2013, the company announced in a press release on Monday.

BlackBerry 10, which the Wall Street Journal described as a "patchwork" mobile operating system, uses software purchased by RIM along with the company QNX in 2010. BlackBerry 10 was already previewed in early 2012 and will offer support for both the all-touchscreen user interface that's been popularized by Apple and Android devices, as well as continued support for BlackBerry's physical, tactile keyboard that was once a strong loyalty driver among users.

RIM said that it would launch two BlackBerry 10 smartphones at its January event, which will "happen simultaneously in multiple countries."
