Barber Holds ‘Congress On Your Corner’ Event In Tucson

Rep. Ron Barber (D-AZ) held his first "Congress on Your Corner" district event, following his victory two weeks ago in the special election to replace former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was wounded in a 2011 shooting at a similar district event.

The Associated Press reports that Barber's spokesman said about 300 people showed up at the event at a Safeway in Tucson, including some survivors of the 2011 shooting, as well as constituents inquiring about student loans or veteran's benefits.

Giffords survived after being shot in the head at a district event in January 2011, at a different Safeway location in a suburb just outside of Tucson — an event that also used the “Congress On Your Corner” name. Barber was Giffords's district director at the time, and was also wounded in the shooting, in which six people were killed. Giffords resigned her seat a little over a year later in January 2012, in order to focus full time on her recovery.
